Martian Manhunter è uno dei personaggi storici della DC Comics, nonché tra i fondatori e colonna portante della Justice League of America, avendo militato in molte della sue incarnazioni ( tra cui la prima ).
Il suo vero nome è J’onn J’onzz ed è l’ultimo sopravvissuto della sua specie: i marziani verdi. Le sue capacità sono incredibili ( tra le tante cose può mutare forma, leggere nel pensiero, volare ed è praticamente indistruttibile ), ma non mettetelo davanti a un caminetto perché è terrorizzato dal fuoco…!
Le sue grandi potenzialità, però, sono state sfruttate poco dai vari autori che hanno avuto a che fare con lui, se escludiamo rari casi come i cicli di J.M. DeMatteis, Keith Giffen, John Ostrander, Tom Mandrake e Grant Morrison, motivo per cui J’onn J’onzz non ha mai goduto di grande popolarità, almeno rispetto alla maggior parte dei suoi colleghi della Justice League.
Anche la recente trasposizione cinematografica del supergruppo DC, infatti, non ha preso in considerazione il marziano, che comunque può vantare una presenza fissa nel serial CW Supergirl, dove lo vediamo assumere le sembianze umane del corrucciato Hank Henshaw e molto più raramente quelle aliene della sua forma originale.
Nonostante qualche divergenza con la controparte fumettistica, il personaggio del serial riesce comunque a ritagliarsi un cospicuo spazio all’interno dello show e a raccontare la sua storia, caratterizzata dal dramma di aver dovuto abbandonare il proprio pianeta, afflitto da una guerra fratricida nella quale ha visto morire anche la sua famiglia.
Il profondo dolore e il senso di solitudine che lo attanagliano rendono J’onn J’onzz molto più “umano” che marziano, un po’ come lo stesso Superman, alieno ma i cui sentimenti lo fanno apparire quasi più terrestre di noi. Questo crea un’empatia con il lettore/spettatore, che non vede più questi personaggi come degli dei alteri e intoccabili, ma come degli esseri che provano le nostre stesse frustrazioni, nonostante gli incredibili poteri di cui sono dotati e le grosse responsabilità che ne conseguono.
Queste premesse ci portano all’opera che abbiamo l’onore di presentare qui sul nostro blog, intitolata L’ultimo marziano. Si tratta di un fan tribute scritto da Dan Cutali e illustrato da Michael Formica, con colori di Francesco Grieco e copertina esclusiva di Max Moda (sua la copertina del nostro libro Dead xx Squad e una illustrazione contenuta nel Batman v Superman Concept Artbook), incentrato proprio sul marziano verde della DC.
Benché sia lui il personaggio centrale del racconto, i veri protagonisti sono i componenti del supergruppo della serie tv CW Legends of Tomorrow, ovvero Rip Hunter, White Canary, Captain Cold, Heathwave, Atom e Firestorm. Un team tanto variegato quanto improbabile e interessante, che basa la sua forza proprio sull’eterogeneità dei vari membri e sui tratti distintivi delle loro personalità.
Il mix di azione, avventura, fantascienza, ironia e dramma che caratterizzano le loro storie potrete ritrovarlo concentrato anche nella breve sceneggiatura di Cutali (questo uno dei suoi pezzi per il nostro blog nel Batman Day), dove le nostre “leggende” dovranno tornare indietro nel tempo per scongiurare l’invasione della Terra da parte dei malvagi marziani bianchi, nemici giurati di J’onn J’onzz, ma il prezzo che dovrà pagare quest’ultimo per sconfiggerli sarà altissimo, considerando che ci andrà di mezzo anche la sua famiglia….!
Godetevi dunque questo sentito omaggio alle gesta del gruppo televisivo più sui generis di casa DC e ad uno dei più sottovalutati membri della Justice League, che proprio grazie alle serie CW sta riacquistando gloria e popolarità.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: THE LAST MARTIAN – A Fan Tribute
Martian Manhunter is one of the oldest DC Comics characters, and a founder and regular feature in the Justice League of America, having been a part of many of its incarnations (including the very first).
His real name is J’onn J’onzz, and he’s the last survivor of his species, the Green Martians. His abilities are unbelievable: amongst other things he is a shapeshifter, a mind-reader, he is capable of flight and is virtually indestructible – but don’t sit him in front of your fireplace if you invite him over, as fire terrifies him!
His immense potentiality, however, hasn’t been exploited by the many authors who dealt with him, excluding a few exceptions such as the cycles of stories written by J.M. DeMatteis, Keith Giffen, John Ostrander, Tom Mandrake and Grant Morrison – which explains why J’onn J’onzz never enjoyed a huge deal of popularity, at least when compared to his fellow Justice League members.
Even the recent film featuring the DC Comics supergroup ignored the Martian, who however is a regular in the CW series Supergirl, where we see him as the glowering Hank Henshaw and very seldom as his original, alien form.
Despite a few differences with his comic counterpart, the character managed to carve a pretty good space for himself in the series, getting a chance to tell his story, characterised by the personal tragedy of having been forced to leave his home planet, which was suffering from a bloody civil war in which he lost his whole family.
The deep suffering and the feeling of loneliness that grip him make J’onn J’onzz much more “human” than Martian, somehow just like Superman, an alien whose feelings make him appear nearly more of an “Earthling” than any of us. This creates a certain empathy with the reader or viewer, who ceases seeing those characters as lofty, untouchable deities and starts visualising them as beings who experience our same frustration, despite the incredible powers they are gifted with – and the resulting great responsibilities.
This premise brings us to the work that we are honoured to present here, on our blog: The Last Martian. It’s a fan tribute written by Dan Cutali (English translation by Marco Piva) with art by Michael Formica, coloured by Francesco Grieco and with an exclusive cover by Max Moda (artist of the cover of our book Dead xx Squad and of an illustration included in the Batman v Superman Concept Artbook), focussed on DC Comics’ own Green Martian.
Despite the fact that he is the central character in the story, the true protagonists are the supergroup on which the CW series Legends of Tomorrow is focussed: Rip Hunter, White Canary, Captain Cold, Heat Wave, Atom and Firestorm. A diverse, unlikely, interesting team, whose strength lies in its heterogeneousness and on the distinct personalities of the people forming it.
The mixture of action, adventure, science fiction, irony and tragedy that characterise the series can be found in Cutali’s short script (here’s one of the author’s articles written for our blog on Batman Day), in which our “legends” will travel back in time to prevent an invasion of the Earth by the cruel White Martians, J’onn J’onzz’s sworn enemies; but the price that Martian Manhunter will have to pay will be immense, as his family will end up being involved.
Enjoy, then, this heartfelt tribute to the adventures of the most peculiar of the DC Comics supergroups and to one of the most underappreciated Justice League members who, thanks to the CW series, is finally gaining some glory and popularity.
